With only 30 crewmembers normally assigned to them, and not expected to regularly take in passengers, Mediterranean-class vessels were equipped with just two small transporter bays built directly into the corridors of the craft. These bays were not designed to be manned at all times, and were routinely powered off during cargo runs.
In cases of emergency the larger and more numerous cargo transporters could be used to supplement these bays and beam up to 120 people at the same time.
